7 killed, 6 injured as train rams into vehicle in northern Zambia

LUSAKA, July 5 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people died while six others sustained injuries when a train hit a vehicle in northern Zambia's Mpika District, police said on Saturday.

Godfrey Chilabi, police deputy spokesperson, said the accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at a railway crossing.

He said in a statement that the accident occurred when the driver, who was driving a minibus, failed to stop at the railway crossing, and the vehicle was hit by the oncoming train.

Chilabi said the seven people, including the driver, died on the spot while six others sustained injuries.

"Investigations into the matter are ongoing. We urge all motorists and other road users to exercise caution when approaching railway tracks," he said.
