LUSAKA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Security agencies in Zambia have arrested two local people who were trying to help 15 illegal immigrants into the country by providing them with transport, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Police Assistant Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the two Zambians, a driver and his co-driver, were arrested in the northern district of Chinsali on Tuesday after they attempted to bribe officers at a security checkpoint who tried to check their truck.

He said an inspection of the truck, loaded with planks, found 15 illegal immigrants suspected to be Somalis and Ethiopians.

In recent months, Zambia has seen an increase in illegal immigrants who were using it as an entry point to other countries in the southern African region.

Last month, 27 dead bodies of suspected Ethiopian illegal immigrants were dumped on the outskirts of the Zambian capital of Lusaka after suffocating to death in a truck they were being transported in.
