Cape Town - The Springbok Women's Sevensside have lost in their opening Pool A encounter against New Zealand at Cape Town Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Black Ferns won 40-0 after leading 21-0 at half-time.

The defending women's title side scored six tries by Shiray Kaka, Tyla Nathan-Wong, Mahina Paul, Gayle Broughton and a brace by Alena Saili.

Nathan-Wong landed three conversions and replacement Risi Pouri-Lane converted two tries.

South Africa could not affect the scoreboard as they struggled to get over the New Zealand defence.

South Africa have now played New Zealand six times and have yet to beat them.

The Imbokodo's next Pool A clash will be against Russia (10:13) and Fiji (16:03) on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Blitzboks opening game is scheduled to get under way at 20:03 against Japan on Friday evening.
