The UBS bank in Switzerland has confirmed Britain and Australia have asked for bank details of their nationals on the back of information that was given to US authorities to settle a tax case.

UBS has said that tax and regulatory authorities in a number of jurisdictions have requested the information on cross-border arrangements.

British and Australian tax offices have confirmed that investigations are underway into offshore services from UBS and other Swiss and non-Swiss financial institutions.

The original US investigation was into how UBS helped rich Americans hide money in Switzerland.
