Nigerian gunmen release kidnapped oil workers

Zambia News.Net
Saturday 26th July, 2008 (IANS)

Lagos, July 27 (Xinhua) The eight foreign oil workers who were kidnapped by gunmen Saturday off the coast of Nigeria's oil-rich restive Niger Delta have been released, a media report said Sunday.

No ransom was paid for the release of hostages, the Punch newspaper quoted military sources as saying.

The militants had earlier demanded ransom for their release.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government reinforced security in the Niger Delta region.

The militants have been fighting the government to gain control of the oil reserves in the area.

Since 2006, over 200 foreign workers have been kidnapped in the region, the newspaper said.
